Capitals practice rink 1991–2006; two NHL sheets, home of the NAHL's Maryland Black Bears since 2018
Loading public skate, freestyle, and stick & puck times for Piney Orchard Ice Arena…
Piney Orchard Ice Arena was the Washington Capitals' practice rink from 1991 until 2006, when the team moved to the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington County, Virginia. The Baltimore Skipjacks also used Piney Orchard as their practice facility in the early 1990s.
The building is a 42,375-square-foot, dual-sheet facility with two NHL-size rinks running year round, owned by Black Bear Sports Group. Its tenants are junior hockey at two levels, the Tier II Maryland Black Bears of the NAHL and the Tier III Team Maryland of the EHL, alongside figure skating and men's league hockey. On-site businesses include East Coast Hockey & Skating Supply and The Great Butcher.
A 2017 renovation made Piney Orchard the home of the Black Bears, founded in 2018 as the first Maryland-based team in the NAHL's 42-year history. They played their inaugural game here on September 14, 2018, losing 6–3 to the New Jersey Titans, and the organization has exclusive use of more than 7,000 square feet of locker rooms, training, equipment and office space. Home games drew an average of 480 people over 30 dates in 2020–21.
