Curling in Fremont since 2006

Sharks Ice at Fremont is a public ice facility listed among the properties of Sharks Sports & Entertainment. Club histories from 2006 through early 2018 call the building Solar4America Ice at Fremont, and the older name still turns up in curling records.

Curling arrived in 2006, when the San Francisco Bay Area Curling Club expanded from San Jose to Fremont. From 2009 to 2018 the club ran on three separate sites, San Jose, Fremont and Oakland, and Fremont hosted its Golden Gate Bonspiel, a tournament held every spring over Memorial Day weekend since 2008. In early 2018 the newly formed Silicon Valley Curling Club took over all curling at the San Jose and Fremont rinks, and it still lists both Sharks Ice arenas as its home ice. The Golden Gate Bonspiel has since moved to the Bay Area club's dedicated facility in Oakland.

On the hockey side, the rink runs its own In-House Youth Hockey program across ages and skill levels. Curling also shows up off the club calendar: the rink supplies the stones and brooms for corporate and group events, where the sport has become a hit over the past few years.

Booking & check-in

Everyone who goes on the ice must pay and check in at the front desk before the session starts, and must wear a public-session sticker visibly on their clothing; proof is a printed receipt or the sticker or wristband. Skating without paying brings a 60-day ban from all Sharks Ice and Oakland Ice locations for a first offence and a lifetime ban for a second. A facility waiver is mandatory for all programme participants.

Skating with children

Buckets, the rink's skating aids, are only allowed on weekend daytime sessions, whenever a birthday party is booked with the Party Coordinator, and on busy national-holiday sessions at management's discretion; they must stay in the designated area and be stacked to waist height. Skaters may not carry children or items such as cameras and handbags, and no more than two people may skate together.
