San Mateo's Bridgepointe rink, saved by a four-year community fight and reopened by Nazareth in 2017.
Nazareth Ice Oasis is San Mateo's ice rink, at Bridgepointe. A master plan signed in the mid-1990s allowed the rink to be built there, and by 2013 its operator had run it for 14 years for a tight-knit skating community that saw it as a place where skating stars are born, Kristi Yamaguchi among them.
That year the Bridgepointe site's owner, SPI Holdings, declined to renew the lease and closed the rink in May 2013, wanting to tear it down. Strong community resistance followed, and a four-year battle between SPI, city officials and residents ended with owner Dennis Wong saying he had misjudged the civic devotion to the ice rink.
Nazareth, which then also ran Nazareth Ice Oasis in Redwood City, announced that May it would take over the Bridgepointe rink. Six hockey teams played an unofficial opening before the official reopening on October 1, 2017, and shelves were stocked with hundreds of rental skates.
