Oakland's city-owned ice center, Alysa Liu's home rink

In April 1995 Oakland's Redevelopment Agency signed a ground lease with a private developer team to build and operate the Oakland Ice Center, financing it with $11 million in tax-exempt bonds, and the rink opened in March 1996 in the city's Uptown district. The developers went under three months later, so the agency took ownership to keep the rink open while it searched for a new operator. The parent company of the San Jose Sharks took over in October 2007 and still manages the building.

The city-owned facility holds two sheets: an NHL-size rink of 200 by 85 feet and an Olympic-size rink of 200 by 100 feet. The Oakland Bears Hockey Club, a competitive travel organization and one of the oldest operating clubs in California, practices and plays here and fields teams at every available age group in the Northern California Youth Hockey Association. The figure-skating program covers lessons, ice dancing and synchronized skating. The San Francisco Bay Area Curling Club curled here until 2018.

It is the home practice rink of East Bay-raised figure skater Alysa Liu, who in 2019, at 13, became the youngest U.S. figure skating champion in history and retired at 16 after placing sixth at the 2022 Winter Olympics. As of March 2026 she still trains here as a newly crowned Olympic gold medalist.
