The Safeway Holiday Ice Rink in Union Square sits in the heart of the plaza, near the corner of Geary and Powell Streets. Willy Bietak Productions announced its 18th season in 2025, an 11-week run that turned Union Square into an outdoor rink for locals and visitors from around the world. The rink's own page lists daily skating in hour-long sessions that start every 90 minutes.
That season opened with an Opening Celebration of on-ice performances and special appearances, and the calendar included Classical Sundays, a one-night Silent Skate party and a New Year's Day Polar Bear Skate. Skaters with little or no experience could learn from professional instructors every weekend.
Kaiser Permanente, the presenting sponsor, describes the rink as a favorite annual tradition for families across the Bay Area.
