Jamaica Plain's outdoor rink, reopened in 1999

DCR Kelly Outdoor Rink opened in 1999 after Jamaica Plain residents spent the late 1990s rallying to bring an outdoor rink back to the neighbourhood. The original Kelly Rink and Roxbury's Melnea Cass Rink had both been removed without any replacement for public outdoor winter skating. The Friends of the Kelly Rink have been part of the rink since that opening, first working out of a used trailer with donated skates.

The outdoor rink overlooks the train tracks and operates only in winter, when it is cold enough. A warming room and a small hut-like building sit beside the ice. On February 7, 2026, the Northeastern Figure Skating Club performed a free live show on the ice.

DCR renovated the rink in 2009, and the Friends of the Kelly Rink still raise funds to keep it accessible and improve it. The group marked the rink's 25th year in February 2025. That May, DCR presented a reconstruction plan that calls for an open-air roof to block the sun and shield the ice from precipitation, a rebuilt ice bed, an extended bike path to the rink, a new entrance area, and a relocated Zamboni shed and restrooms.
