South Boston's Murphy Rink

Murphy Memorial Rink was first built as an outdoor facility in 1961 and was named in 1965 for Francis L. Murphy, a lifelong South Boston resident and Boston firefighter killed in the line of duty responding to a fire on Trumbull Street on October 1, 1964.

The state Department of Conservation and Recreation closed the rink in early 2015 for a renovation originally budgeted at $2.5 million; unforeseen repairs pushed the cost toward $5 million, and beginning in 2014 the rink received almost $5 million in infrastructure and capital improvements, including new locker rooms, team rooms and showers.

In March 2017 DCR held a ceremony to rededicate the Francis L. Murphy Memorial Rink, with Governor Charlie Baker and Mayor Martin J. Walsh expected to attend. The Boston Fire Department and Boston Police Department followed it with a charity hockey game, and the Boston Latin girls' hockey team played a state tournament game.
