Batavia's 1978 city ice arena, renamed in 2022 for a Ramparts and Batavia High School hockey captain.
Batavia's ice arena opened in 1978 as a 24,000-square-foot city-owned building with an NHL-size rink that becomes a dry concrete sport court from April through August. It is run by Batavia Sports Facility Management, a local company formed solely to manage the arena.
In 2022 the rink was named for David McCarthy, who grew up playing for the Ramparts in the Genesee Amateur Hockey Association here and captained Batavia High School's varsity team to a Division I runner-up finish in 1994-95. McCarthy died in a car accident on November 2, 2006, at 29. The City Council approved the naming on February 14, 2022, and the new signs were unveiled on June 24.
The Batavia Men's Hockey League, formed in 1979, plays here from September to March, alongside Batavia Notre Dame United high school hockey and the Batavia Ramparts youth program, and two meeting rooms host community functions, expos and trade shows.
