Buffalo's third public ice rink, opened in 1990

North Buffalo Ice Rink opened in 1990 as the third public ice rink in the City of Buffalo. For years it was known as Lafayette Ice Rink, and the city's own rink listings still carry that name next to the current one. The City of Buffalo owns the building and has put more than $3.4 million into it since 2006; earlier rounds of work replaced the dasher boards and protective glass and added a new Zamboni and scoreboard.

Since August 1, 2011 the rink has been run by Bison Hockey, the North Buffalo Bison Hockey Association, formed in 1959 and chosen by the city that June to oversee operations. North Buffalo is one of the association's home rinks, and affiliate organizations including Buffalo Skating Club use the ice as well. The building sits next door to Public School 81 at Tacoma and Homer avenues.

Public skating runs every day of the week and draws more than 15,000 participants a year. The ice is in use around 18 hours a day, seven days a week, and each year the rink takes part in USA Hockey's Try Hockey For Free program for youth and adults.
