The Sabres' first practice rink

Holiday Twin Rinks was built in 1971 amid the excitement over the Buffalo Sabres' new NHL franchise, and at the time it was the largest ice facility in Western New York. It served as the Sabres' original practice facility, but the arena struggled and went bankrupt in 1974; Marine Midland Bank ran it for a year before it was sold to the partnership that had built it.

Its central location earned it a reputation as a big-game venue. It has been home rink to the University at Buffalo's Division I team, Canisius College and many top high schools, and since 1976 it has hosted the Pepsi Tournament of Champions, now the Pepsi Hockey Invitational.

It is home to the Buffalo Regals youth hockey association, founded by Bob Westphal in 1955, whose alumni include Aaron Miller and Brooks Orpik, and to the Buffalo Hornets, which run 30 teams and host amateur tournaments.
