Two NHL sheets opened in 2014 on a long-vacant downtown Lockport site, ending a 17-year gap without hockey
Cornerstone CFCU Arena brought hockey back to Lockport for the first time since the Kenan Arena closed 17 years earlier. Ground was broken on October 29, 2013 on a downtown site that had once held a Sears, a Twin Fair and a supermarket and had sat vacant for more than ten years; the doors opened about a year later. The arena was the dream of William "Ben" May, a Lockport attorney and founding director of the Grigg-Lewis Foundation, which put $4 million into the $14 million project. It is not a city building: the not-for-profit Lockport Ice Arena & Sports Center, Inc. owns it.
The building is 93,500 square feet with two NHL-sized rinks, both sled-hockey accessible, and seating for 630 spectators. The Lockport Lock Monsters youth hockey organization is based here, Lockport High School's hockey team practices and plays here, and local figure skating clubs share the ice year round. The first game in the building was played by the Lockport Express Junior A team, which has since folded.
The building also hosts community traditions such as the First Night New Year's Eve celebration, and its tenth anniversary in 2024 came with an estimate of more than 150,000 players, parents and spectators passing through each year.
