Troy's Hobart Arena, 75 years on

Hobart Arena began with a vision. In 1946 William H. and Edward A. Hobart set out to greatly expand recreation in Troy, and construction crews led by William Van Ausdal of Hobart Brothers built what became the centerpiece of the plan. By January 1950 it was hosting basketball, and it officially opened as Hobart Sports Arena on September 6, 1950, with ten sold-out performances of Holiday on Ice.

The arena seats 3,782, up to 4,500 for sellout hockey and 5,282 for concerts, around an 85-by-185-foot ice surface. After a 1995 visit by Lucia Bravo flagged needed upgrades, Troy City Council approved a $9.6 million renovation and expansion that ran from February 2016 to May 2017, enlarging the ice, adding new seating and a second lobby, and making the west lobby accessible.

Its stage has drawn Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Nat King Cole, Sonja Henie, Liberace and Elvis Presley, honored with banners along Adams Street, and in 2023 the first AEW House Rules show. The Troy Skating Club, founded in 1952, has staged ice shows with Scott Hamilton, Peggy Fleming and Carol Heiss-Jenkins, and has held a summer competition every July since 1974.
