Cincinnati's first indoor, year-round ice rink, privately owned by shareholders since 1973.
Northland Ice Center opened its doors in the summer of 1973 as Cincinnati's first indoor, year-round ice skating rink. More than five decades on, it is still owned and operated by private shareholders under Northland Ice Skating Inc., rather than by a city or a national chain, and it skates on a single regulation NHL-size surface of 200 by 85 feet.
That one sheet serves a long list of the city's skating and hockey groups. It is home to the Cincinnati Amateur Hockey Association, the Queen City Figure Skating Club, the Northland Figure Skating Academy, the University of Cincinnati Hockey Club and the Cincinnati Adult Ice Hockey Leagues, and it bills itself as the place to learn how to skate and play hockey, with lessons for all ages and abilities.
