From warehouse club to Cyclones practice rink
Queen City Sportsplex occupies a former Makro warehouse club in Evendale, which is why the road to it is still named Makro Drive. Known then as Sports Plus Arena, the 1,200-seat arena was home to the Cincinnati Swords, who became the Thunder in 2015 and moved to the Cincinnati Gardens for the 2015-16 season.
The majority owners of the ECHL Cincinnati Cyclones bought it in 2023, and it took the Queen City Sportsplex name in 2024. It is now the Cyclones' official practice facility, and more than a million dollars of improvements have brought new public restrooms, renovated locker rooms and bar, new ice equipment and new flooring.
The building has two full sheets of ice for hockey, figure skating, broomball, sled hockey and open skating, plus six hardwood courts and a workout facility. A third sheet, a modernized facade and a new viewing mezzanine are planned in time for the 2026 hockey season.
