Danville's downtown civic center since 1980

The David S. Palmer Arena began as the Danville Civic Center, a project conceived to bring revenue into the city and re-energize downtown. Illinois Governor Daniel Walker approved Danville's bid to create a Civic Center Authority in September 1975, and ground was broken on August 17, 1978.

Mayor David S. Palmer was instrumental in keeping the plan on track through two years of debate over the budget and the building's purpose. The Civic Center opened to the public on September 20, 1980, and the arena now carries his name.

The building is a multi-purpose arena that seats 4,750 for concerts and 2,100 for sports. Along with team hockey, it offers open ice skating, hosts concerts from time to time and runs the U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills Program.
