Evergreen Lake's natural-ice rinks, skated since the dam was finished in 1928

Skating on Evergreen Lake is a tradition dating back to 1928, when the dam was finished. The old log-cabin warming hut still stands along the shore. The lake is billed as North America's largest groomed outdoor rink, and on busy days a couple thousand people skate it.

A Zamboni, fitted by its driver with a Volkswagen engine, grooms the natural ice, and at least 16 inches of ice is preferred to hold it. Because the rinks depend on the weather, the Evergreen Park & Recreation District cannot guarantee opening days, times or ice quality. The old hope was to open by mid-December; it is increasingly more like New Year's Eve.

Hockey stays on rinks 1 through 5 for safety, and the lake is still the scene of the hockey-playing old-timers known as salty dogs. Evergreen Lake remains the town centerpiece.
