Opened in 1997 as the I.C.E. Arena, built by a youth hockey association founded in 1987
The Martin Ice Arena opened in 1997 as the I.C.E. Arena. The Amateur Hockey Association of Mt. Pleasant, started in 1987 by a group of outdoor enthusiasts to promote youth skating and hockey, built the indoor rink. Before it, hockey, figure skating and weekend tournaments meant a 60-mile drive.
A commission formed in 1995 by Isabella County, Chippewa Township, Union Township, the city of Mt. Pleasant, Central Michigan University and Mt. Pleasant Public Schools led the project. Land donations, local contractor pricing, bank loans, state grants and funding from the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe paid for it, and volunteers gave time and materials.
The arena is now the home of the Mount Pleasant Area Hockey team, a co-operative high school varsity program. Since 2012 it has been part of the Isabella Community Sportsplex, alongside Morey Courts, which opened in 2008.
