Houston's Willowbrook Aerodrome, open since December 1995
The Aerodrome Ice Skating Complex opened for business on December 7, 1995, in the Willowbrook area of northwest Houston. Architect David Slattery designed it and E. E. Reed built it: a 42,900-square-foot building on 4.65 acres with one regulation-size sheet, planned for figure skaters, league hockey and public skating. Chuck Watson, who then owned the Houston Aeros of the International Hockey League, said the northwest side was starting to grow and the hope was that the Aerodrome "would provide the community with a place to experience" skating.
Hockey and figure skating share the sheet. The Junior Aeros youth program and its high school hockey league teams play out of the rink, and The Skating Club of Houston is based here. Adaptive skating has a place too: STARskaters held its first skating event at the Willowbrook Aerodrome on August 2, 2008.
The ice itself was rebuilt after Hurricane Rita. The Aeros, by then majority owned by Minnesota Sports and Entertainment, left for Des Moines after the 2013 Calder Cup playoffs, while the Junior Aeros name stayed on the youth program. The complex marked 25 years in business in December 2020 with a month of festivities, mascot Chilly handing out T-shirts and pins.
