The first mall rink, under the Galleria's glass

Ice at the Galleria opened alongside Houston's Galleria on November 16, 1970, the first mall rink in the country. Developer Gerald D. Hines modeled the Galleria on the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan and set the floor-level, year-round rink beneath the central glass atrium he had added to make the lower-level stores more visible. The original skylights over the ice carried three hanging chandeliers.

The 20,000-square-foot facility has an ice sheet of 80 by 180 feet. Known for years as Polar Ice, the rink reopened under new management in October 2010 as Ice at the Galleria, dropping the "Polar" from its name. By July 2025 a monthslong $1 million renovation had given it its first comprehensive rebuild since 1970, removing the uneven ice and concrete base that had accumulated over time and rebuilding it with modern technology.

Today the rink is the training center for the Houston Figure Skating Club and the Bayou City Figure Skating Club, and the Ice School Dropouts synchronized skating team performs in its showcases. Luis Guerro, with ASEC since 2007, is operations manager, and Becky Dever is director of skating. Tara Lipinski trained on this public rink, and it still draws more than half a million visitors a year. Skaters take the ice under the glass dome with the Galleria's levels rising around them.
