Skating round the Shakespeare statue

Underbelly runs Skate Leicester Square, set up with the Heart of London Business Alliance and Westminster City Council. Its circular rink is built round the square's Shakespeare statue, which the ice encircles.

Leicester Square was laid out in 1670 as Leicester Fields, named after Leicester House, and is now a pedestrianised square at the centre of London's entertainment district. Albert Grant bought the gardens in 1874 and gave them to the Metropolitan Board of Works; his restoration added four statues and the Shakespeare fountain. The square reopened in May 2012 after 17 months of work.

The rink is outdoors and opens in rain, snow or shine. A pop-up market with food, drink and gifts surrounds it, with a seasonal bar beside the ice, and every ticket carries a donation to the Angel Child Fund at The Brain Tumour Charity.
