Volunteer-built in 1977 after outdoor rinks from 1962; city-owned, run by Waupun Youth Hockey
Loading public skate, freestyle, and stick & puck times for Waupun Ice Arena…
Hockey reached Waupun in the early 1960s through Robert Rompre, a local businessman and a former member of the 1952 US Olympic hockey team. Volunteers built the city's first hockey rink in the winter of 1962-63, a permanent outdoor rink followed in 1969, and a second outdoor rink was added in 1972.
The first fundraiser for an indoor building was a Hockey Unlimited Banquet in 1972, and the association finished the rink in 1977 with donations, fundraising and a large number of volunteers. The City of Waupun owns the building, but the Waupun Youth Hockey Association operates it, which makes it one of the few non-profit rinks of its kind in Wisconsin.
After a group of fans and University of Wisconsin coach Bob Johnson presented plans to the school board in March 1970, Waupun became one of nine Wisconsin high schools to add varsity hockey. The rink hosts the high school teams and the Waupun Figure Skaters Club, founded in 1981, with games or tournaments every weekend from mid-October to mid-March. In January 2025 the City Council renamed it the Waupun Recreational Arena, to avoid confusion with the city's new Community Center.
