Named for Clary Anderson and home ice for the Montclair High School Mounties, who won the state title in 1995
Clary Anderson Arena is the seasonal ice rink at Essex Park in Montclair, sharing the park with the township pool and playing fields, and it is named for Clary Anderson. The rink belongs to the township, which in 2008, as part of a round of budget cuts, decided it should be privatized. Residents worried that fees would rise and service would slip, so the township kept some authority over the rink while Ohio-based United Skates of America took over its operation in September 2008; the rink opened for business under that arrangement on October 1 that year. Today it is managed by Clary Anderson, LLC.
The arena is the home rink of the Montclair High School Mounties, who play their home games here and won the public school state championship in 1995, beating Chatham High School 2-1 in overtime. Every year the Mounties face in-town rival Montclair Kimberley Academy at Clary Anderson Arena, and toward the end of each season they host the Montclair Cup; MKA won the 2011, 2012 and 2013 games.
