Essex County's South Mountain Arena of 1958

Richard J. Codey Arena opened in 1958 as South Mountain Arena, the Essex County rink in West Orange. A temporary outdoor rink was used each winter from the mid-1970s, and a second, smaller indoor rink was added in 1983. During 2004 and 2005 the arena went through major renovations, and it was renamed Codey Arena when it reopened.

The building has two NHL-sized rinks: the main arena seats 2,500 and the second rink about 500. The New Jersey Devils Youth Hockey club is based here with more than twenty teams, from entry level up to AAA. The Essex Skating Club is the arena's figure skating club, Garden State Speedskating counts Codey as one of its two home rinks and runs a Learn to Speed Skating program on this ice, and the New Jersey Daredevils, a special needs hockey team, have practised and played their home games in the building since 2002.

The most recent arrival is a professional team: on September 13, 2024, the New York Sirens of the Professional Women's Hockey League announced they would make the arena their practice facility. Off the ice, the arena has hosted the Essex County high school wrestling tournament and graduation ceremonies, and the county uses it as an emergency shelter during natural disasters.
