The Ice House in Hackensack opened in 1996 as a complex of four full-sized rinks, and today it counts 600 North Jersey Avalanche hockey families, 1,200 figure skaters and 1,400 adult league players. Its pro shop is one of the largest hockey and skating shops in the New York-New Jersey area.
The figure skating program has a worldwide reputation for Olympic-level skaters and coaches. Since 2002 the Ice House has sent more than 20 skaters to the Olympics, including gold medalists Sarah Hughes, Elena Bereznaia and Anton Sikharulidze, and 11 Olympians from Israel, Switzerland, Slovakia, Canada and Australia trained here for the 2018 Winter Games. The shop's sharpener set the boots to blades for Hughes before her 2002 gold medal.
The building is the main training base for the Team Image synchronized skating team and home to the Ice House Figure Skating Club, which holds US Figure Skating test sessions and beginner Basic Skills competitions here. Its Learn to Skate program is ranked among the ten best in the country by Learn to Skate USA, and the North Jersey Avalanche ran its 29th annual summer hockey camp here in 2026.
