Freeport's village ice rink, outdoors first and year-round for about seven years
The ice rink at the Freeport Recreation Center began as an outdoor rink, part of a recreation center project that ran from 1973 to 1974. For years a bubble covered it each season, skating was mostly limited to the colder months, and the rink closed for the summer.
New insulation and air-conditioning equipment let the Village of Freeport hold ice in every season, and the rink has run year-round for about seven years. Ice time on Long Island is in high demand, and Freeport's rink is often booked solid; Mayor Robert Kennedy says the ice is often in use late at night.
A skating school teaches children as young as three, and Arrows Youth Hockey and the Freeport Skating Academy are among its users. Friday night is the busiest public session, for pre-teens and teenagers, while Sundays are known as family skating days.
