Brewster Ice Arena, built by the Santini family

Brewster Ice Arena grew out of one hockey family. Steve Santini, who played Division I hockey at the University of Maine, and his father saw northern Westchester and Putnam starving for a private rink, met with engineer and landowner Jim Hahn, and opened the arena in December 1997. It has expanded in steps since: a second full-size rink in December 1998, an upstairs studio rink in 2000, a sports bar in 2002, a fitness center in 2005 and an outdoor rink, the Pond, in 2013, roofed in 2017.

The two indoor sheets are named for the years they opened. The '98 Rink is the showcase, with seating for more than 500 and a camera perch; the '99 Rink has a catwalk for about 60 standing spectators. The three-level building covers 90,000 square feet.

It is home to the Westchester Express, which moved there in 2002, and to the New York Apple Core, which the Santini family has run since 1970 and consolidated in Brewster in 2012. Between them the organizations have won more than twenty state championships, and nine Apple Core players have reached the NHL.
