Year-round ice on Long Island's South Shore since 1998

Newbridge Arena is the Town of Hempstead's rink in Newbridge Road Park in Bellmore. Private owners started leasing the arena from the town in 1994, installed new equipment, and in 1998 opened the rink to skaters year-round. Most rinks on the South Shore close from April to June; Newbridge keeps its ice in through the summer.

Hockey fills much of that ice. In 2012 the arena ran its own intramural house league of 12 teams for players aged 5 to 16, while the Freeport Arrows, the Green Machine Icecats and other private teams and adult hockey groups also practised there. The youth recreational house league is still on the arena's program today, alongside the skating school's fall and winter group lessons. Figure skaters train here as well: one Merrick skater met Bellmore coach Aimee Molle at Newbridge at age 7 and, almost seven years later in 2012, was still training with her five days a week for competitions, summer included.

Summer public sessions drew 40 to 60 people apiece during the hot, humid summer of 2012.
