Prospect Park's granite-and-canopy rinks

The LeFrak Center at Lakeside was the largest capital project in Prospect Park since the park was created. Led by the Prospect Park Alliance and the city parks department, it replaced a defunct Robert Moses-era skating rink and a 300-car lot with a 75,000-square-foot, year-round skating and recreation facility, while restoring parkland, Music Island and the Esplanade toward Olmsted and Vaux's original vision.

The center is built of rough-hewn dark Canadian granite and set into the park's topography. A regulation-size hockey rink sits under a canopy 108 feet wide and 230 feet long, held up by ten irregularly placed columns, and connects to an elliptical rink open to the sky. Outside ice season the covered rink becomes a roller rink and event space, which brought public roller skating back to Brooklyn for the first time since 2007.

In 2025 the Alliance brought in Ekstein Development Group, which manages community rinks in Queens, to lead programming from roller skating to winter ice sports, and the center marked upgraded facilities with a grand reopening celebration on August 2 and 3.
