The 1929 Ice Casino at Rye Playland
Playland's Ice Casino was built in 1929 and opened in 1930 with two uses: a main ice rink and, on the second floor, a full dance floor that worked as a dance hall through the 1940s and 1950s. The building anchors the beach end of the park's central axis, beside an entrance plaza with a fountain and corner pavilions.
The rink closed during World War II and again from 1967 to 1969 for improvements. It became a popular venue for hockey and skating competitions and shows, and from 1979 until 2002 the New York Rangers used it as their practice rink before moving to Tarrytown.
A renovation completed in 2007 for the Empire State Games gave the main rink a new surface, boards and glass. As of 2023, the Manhattanville College hockey team, based in nearby Purchase, was playing its home games here.
