Virginia's first year-round indoor rink

Fairfax Ice Arena opened on March 17, 1973, as the first year-round indoor ice skating rink in Virginia and in the South, and it celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023. Its founder was Eileen Weisiger, a businesswoman, serial entrepreneur, fashion designer, artist, model and mother.

One of her sons, the late Edwin Berry Weisiger, started the Fairfax Hockey League about 40 years ago as the first multi-level adult hockey league in Virginia. The league still runs two seasons and eight divisions for players 18 and up, from beginners to advanced.

The arena stays open all year and concentrates on recreational skaters and competitive figure skaters, staging ice shows and an annual ISI competition through the season. Seasonal public skates such as Halloween On Ice bring families onto the ice for a skate and games.
