The Carolina Hurricanes' practice rink
The Wake Competition Center was designed by Raleigh developer Jeff Ammons as a multi-sport complex and academy, and after years in the making it opened on August 7, 2020, as the Carolina Hurricanes' new practice facility. Because of COVID-19, the first skate looked a bit different.
The Hurricanes and the center announced their partnership in December 2019, after the team had practiced at Raleigh Center Ice, and the team occupies a 12,000-square-foot permanent area with its own locker rooms and equipment space. The hockey side is a 115,000-square-foot building with two NHL-size sheets of 200 by 85 feet, a school and a cafe, and the rink now carries the Invisalign Arena name.
It is home to the Jr. Canes USPHL and youth programs and to college club hockey, including NC State's club team, whose games have drawn 1,200 fans with the old PNC Arena organ playing.
