Polar Ice Garner, the former Garner Ice House
Polar Ice Garner, formerly known as the Garner Ice House, is one of the Polar Ice rinks in the Triangle. It has an NHL-size ice rink, an off-ice training room, a full-service concession stand, on- and off-ice figure skating jump harnesses and three multipurpose rooms.
Its hockey programs grew quickly. A youth hockey league started in the fall of 2013, and in 2014 the Carolina Hurricanes sponsored Polar Ice's youth programs at its Garner, Cary and Wake Forest rinks. "Hockey has made huge strides in the Triangle since the Hurricanes relocated in 1997," the 2014 announcement said. Adults play in a year-round league with tiered levels, and PHHL age groups from 10U to 14U practice here.
The rink is a training center for the Raleigh Youth Hockey Association, the East Coast Eagles and the Triangle Figure Skating Club. Elena Betchke, who won the 1992 Olympic silver medal in pair skating, has coached at the Garner rink.
