Built in 1964 as UMass Lowell's Tully Forum, now the town of Chelmsford's high school and youth hockey rink
Chelmsford Forum was built in 1964 and stands in Billerica, just across the Chelmsford town line. UMass Lowell bought the arena with money appropriated by the state legislature, and it carried the name Tully Forum after state senator B. Joseph Tully. Lowell hockey played 18 seasons in the building and won the NCAA Division II national championship in 1981 and 1982.
The ice measures 185 by 85 feet and the stands hold 3,200; for the title game against Babson, Lowell sold 4,250 tickets anyway. The town of Chelmsford now owns the building. Chelmsford High School hockey, the Chelmsford Hockey Association and Tech Hockey, a co-op of Nashoba Tech, Greater Lowell Tech and Greater Lawrence Tech, call it home. Chelmsford Hockey Association, a non-profit youth program with in-house hockey, a girls program and travel teams for ages 8 to 18, runs its Learn to Skate sessions and in-house practices on this ice.
By January 1998, at the end of UMass Lowell's run in the building, the choice was demolition or a lease to the town of Chelmsford for youth and schoolboy hockey. The lease won out: FMC Ice Sports managed the rink from 1997 to 2018, and in March 2018 Valley Rinks took over, a group that also runs the Haverhill, Lawrence and Malden Valley Forums.
