One NHL-size sheet with room for about 750 fans, drawing 10,000 visitors a week by 2003
Center Ice Sports Complex opened in North Canton in the late 1990s under local ownership, built for hockey and figure skating in Stark County. By 2003 it was drawing as many as 10,000 visitors a week.
The building holds one NHL-size sheet, 200 feet by 85 feet, with seating for about 750 fans, four locker rooms, a referee room and full-sized benches and penalty boxes. Once a year the ice is taken out and replaced: roughly 50,000 gallons of water under several layers of paint, a job messy enough that the "Dirty Jobs" television program once considered filming it.
In 2011 the rink was home to three high school hockey teams, Jackson, Hoover and Hoban, and to the University of Akron's hockey team. The youth program at that time was the Canton-Akron Hockey Association, whose teams play as the Penguins in black and gold, and whose Squirt team had won the USA Hockey Ohio championship the season before. In summer the sheet doubles as a place to get out of 90-degree heat.
