Kent State's 1970 campus arena, now a single 200-by-85-foot sheet with seating for 1,500
Kent State University's Ice Arena was built in 1970 for student recreation and as the home of a club hockey team known as the Clippers, which played here until 1980. It still serves both the university community and the outlying communities around Kent.
There is one ice surface today: the Competition Rink, 200 by 85 feet, with seating for 1,500 fans and a large lobby connected to the rink. The north-side bleachers sit behind the team benches and include a small balcony section and a press area. The arena is home to the Kent State ACHA Division 1 and Division 3 teams and the Kent State Figure Skating Team, and also to the Kent Skating Club, the Kent Cyclones youth teams and area high school teams.
A major renovation in 2006–2007 upgraded the seating and locker rooms in the main arena; the elevated south-side bleachers above the main entry were built as part of that work. In 2021 the university announced plans to create a facility for its marching band in the building because of a planned loss of facilities elsewhere on campus. The renovation that started in 2023 eliminated the building's second rink, replacing it with a connected but separate facility focused on music education.
