Mentor's 1982 city arena, grown to two NHL rinks and a studio rink with 300,000 visitors a year.
Mentor's skating started with a field by the fire station that would flood and then freeze in winter. The Mentor Civic Ice Arena opened on September 18, 1982, to a line that ran out the door, and its popularity led to a second rink in 1998.
Today the arena has two NHL-size rinks and a studio rink, a combination only a handful of Cleveland-area rinks can match, plus an equipment shop and a concession stand. More than 300,000 people come through its doors each year.
It is home ice for Mentor High School, Lake Catholic and several youth hockey teams, and it hosts four youth hockey showcases and two annual tournaments known together as the Ice of March. Olympic medalist Nancy Kerrigan visited the arena in 2022.
