The City of Garfield Heights' indoor ice rink, open for skating from September through March
The Dan Kostel Recreation Center is the City of Garfield Heights' ice rink, and the city calls it the place where many residents take their first steps on the ice before going on as recreational skaters, figure skaters or hockey players. The rink typically runs from September through March and is open seven days a week in season. The city's parks staff look after it along with a swimming pool and 23 acres of recreation grounds.
Public skating comes as a list of dated sessions rather than a weekly grid, mostly on Friday evenings and weekend afternoons. Several are themed, including a Halloween Skate, a Turkey Trot Skate, a Turn on the Lights skate and a Skate with Santa. These special events get their own flyers and reduced rates, and the city notes that any session can change without advance notice.
Between public sessions the ice is busy with programs: municipal figure skating and beginner hockey, and skating lessons from beginner to adult. Two area high school teams, the Cleveland Wildcats and Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, call the rink home, and Adaptive Sports Ohio has recruited sled hockey players here.
