Shaker Heights' city rink since 1968

Thornton Park Ice Arena is the City of Shaker Heights’ indoor rink, opened in late 1968 after the Recreation Department polled residents in 1964 about wanting an indoor ice rink. Skating at the site is older than the building: Charles Thornton, for whom the park was named at its 1958 dedication, had asked the Shaker Heights Fire Department to flood a vacant lot so children could skate. In 1969, after years of controversy, the rink and pool were opened to Cleveland residents living in the Shaker Heights school district.

The Shaker Figure Skating Club, founded in 1971, makes its home here and is one of the largest US Figure Skating clubs in Ohio, with more than 160 members. The Shaker Heights High School hockey team and the Shaker Youth Hockey Association also call the arena home. Each winter the club hosts the Ohio High School Team Figure Skating Championships on this ice, and each May the city’s Spring Ice Spectacular draws full houses.

In March 2026, with the building 58 years old, the city funded a study on whether to repair the arena, replace it with a new rink, or convert the structure to other uses.
