Greenwich town rink, opened outdoors in 1971 and renamed for Olympic champion Dorothy Hamill in 1976
Loading public skate, freestyle, and stick & puck times for Dorothy Hamill Ice Rink…
Dorothy Hamill Ice Rink is the Town of Greenwich's public rink, run by the Department of Parks & Recreation inside Eugene Morlot Memorial Park in the Byram section of town. It was built in stages over several decades, starting as an outdoor rink in November 1971 with a warming hut that housed the electrical and refrigeration equipment for making ice. One longtime skater, writing in the Greenwich Sentinel in January 2025, remembered it in 1972 as just a slab of ice and boards. In 1976 the rink was enclosed and renamed for Dorothy Hamill, Greenwich's own Olympic gold medalist.
Today it is a single indoor sheet, with the warming hut still listed among the rink's features. As of January 2025 the rink serves more than 3,000 skaters a year, from figure skaters to youth and adult hockey leagues. Greenwich High School's boys' and girls' hockey teams, junior varsity and varsity, practice and play their home games here, and the Greenwich Cardinal Youth Hockey Program also depends on this ice.
The town has been planning a replacement. A June 2024 town description of the project stated that the building does not meet current life-safety or ADA compliance codes, and in March 2026 Greenwich's finance board, the BET, approved $41.2 million in funding for the rink, with conditions.
