Newington's two-rink arena and the Connecticut Chiefs
Newington Arena opened in 1997 as a 77,000-square-foot facility with two NHL-size ice rinks. In December 2022 an affiliate of Black Bear Sports Group acquired it as part of its growing portfolio of rinks, and the Connecticut Chiefs, an independently owned junior and Tier I youth hockey program and long-term tenant, stayed on as anchor tenant.
Beyond the two sheets, the building houses Arena Golf and its golf simulator, Future Fitness Training, The Pro Shop of Newington, the Arena Grill and Elite Chiropractic, along with leased locker rooms and offices.
The arena is a hub for local hockey. It is home to the Chiefs, Central Connecticut Youth Hockey, the Capital Wolves, Central Connecticut State University hockey and various high school teams. In February 2026 a carbon monoxide buildup forced an immediate evacuation of the rink on a Saturday night.
