Norwich's 1995 city rink, near closure in 2014 and reopened by Wonderland of Ice as the Rose Garden.
Norwich's city-owned ice arena opened on November 26, 1995. It never turned a profit, and by 2014 it owed the city money and was running on a rented chiller unit that used too much energy.
In February 2014 it faced permanent closure. The City Council rejected a bond for a new chiller that May, and the rink closed on June 30. Bridgeport-based Wonderland of Ice Associates then took over under a deal with the city and spent more than $1 million of its own money on renovations, including an overhauled lobby with a vaulted ceiling and LED lighting.
It reopened as the rebranded Rose Garden Ice Arena on December 20, 2014, and has been promoted since as a year-round destination with offerings such as yoga. The city still handles major work on the building's exterior, including replacing parts of the original 1995 roof.
