East Haven's town-run single-sheet rink, closed by a piping leak and back on the ice after a 2022 rebuild
East Haven Ice Rink is the town's Patsy DiLungo Veteran's Memorial Ice Rink, a single-sheet municipal arena. It has been teaching local kids to skate for decades: one of its current Learn to Skate instructors learned here in the 1970s, and another got her start on the same ice. Before it closed, the rink hosted East Haven High School, East Haven Youth Hockey, Guilford High School and the Shoreline Figure Skaters alongside lessons, leagues and camps.
The rink shut down after a leak was found in the ice-floor piping, and town officials described years of disrepair behind the closure. Work to rescue it started in 2021 and was completed in 2022. The rebuild replaced the cold floor and its piping, installed new dasher boards and rubber flooring, replaced the dehumidification system entirely, and swapped the discontinued R404A refrigerant plant for new ice-making equipment with gas-detection sensors and a new electrical switchboard. The finished building measures 33,650 square feet.
Skating lessons returned in 2023-24, when the town's recreation department and rink staff relaunched East Haven Learn to Skate. East Haven Youth Hockey still calls the rink home, and a new electric Mammoth ice resurfacer now floods the single sheet. The building runs cold, especially in winter, which many visitors treat as part of the rink experience.
