A covered open-air rink in East Rock, closed in 2016 for disrepair and reopened in 2019 after a rebuild.
Ralph Walker Skating Rink sits at the southern end of Blake Field, a 10-acre city park in New Haven's East Rock neighborhood, and is known for its open-air design. The city closed the rink in 2016 because of disrepair and, after considering shutting it for good, launched a two-phase renovation instead. The first phase expanded the roof and the ice length, opened new views of East Rock Park and added new dasher boards and a more efficient compressor system; the second phase brought new locker rooms. The rink reopened in 2019.
In 2021 the city brought in a Bridgeport-based management company with three decades of rink experience to run the renovated rink from that October. The Albertus Magnus College men's ice hockey team made the renovated rink its home facility through a partnership with the City of New Haven. Skate New Haven's seasons at Ralph Walker ran from a holiday recreational camp and Skate with Santa sessions to Albertus Magnus NCAA hockey games and the annual Chief's Cup police-versus-fire game. Skate New Haven has since moved to the Wonderland of Ice in Bridgeport.
