A covered rink on a former apple orchard
Simsbury Farms Ice Rink is the covered outdoor rink at the Town of Simsbury's 235-acre Simsbury Farms recreation complex, which opened for use in 1971 on the former Orkil Farms apple orchard. The rink was rebuilt in 1999, makes its ice with artificial ice-making machinery and operates for 20 weeks during the winter.
It is lighted for evening use, and a heated spectator viewing structure with tiered platforms was added beside it, built between June and November 2016 by Diversity Construction Group.
The rink is home to the Simsbury Youth Hockey Association and a figure skating club, and the town runs a complete learn-to-skate instructional program there, with classes on Sundays. Students enrolled in lessons are given up to five free public skating sessions, and adult pick-up hockey and freestyle skating are also offered through the town.
