Started in 1997 by the Westport PAL as a small rink; enlarged to 75 by 144 feet in its fifth year
Currently out of season The WPAL Rink at Longshore's home page says it is back for the 2026-2027 season with a projected opening day of Friday, November 27. Official schedule update
The Westport Police Athletic League opened its rink at Longshore in 1997 as a small rink beside the Inn at Longshore. After a successful first season, helped by donors' contributions, a larger rink measuring 75 by 144 feet was installed for the fifth year, and that is still its size. Longtime residents still think of it as the "new" skating rink, and the 2021-22 season marked its 25th anniversary.
The league is run by active and retired police officers and community volunteers and provides athletic programs for more than 2,000 local youngsters. It operates the rink with support from the town's Parks and Recreation Department, which schedules the lessons, and area hockey teams use the ice.
The rink is outdoors, and it was forced to shut down for the winter of 2020-21 because of COVID-19. Some of its staff skated there as children.
