Founded in 1973, renovated in 2016, and home ice for Darien Blue Wave and New Canaan Rams high school hockey
Darien Ice House opened in 1973, founded by five partners: Frank Cooper, Francis Grasso, W. Robert Haskell, John Nastasi and John Vallerie Jr. It is one of the original rinks in Fairfield County, Connecticut, and in the decades since it has hosted Olympic figure skating exhibitions and NHL player exhibitions alongside its youth and high school programs. The rink is now owned by the Romano family of Stamford and Michael Pavia, a former mayor of Stamford.
The rink is home ice for two towns' high school programs: the Darien Blue Wave boys and girls teams and the New Canaan Rams boys and girls teams. Through its partnership with the New Canaan Winter Club, a club founded in 1957, the rink also hosts boys and girls travel hockey programs and the Connecticut Ice Cats girls travel program. Figure skating has a place too: Darien Ice House sponsors the Skyliners synchronized skating team's practices.
The biggest change came in 2016, when the rink was renovated with all new ice-making equipment, updated locker rooms and bathrooms and a rebuilt front lobby. Public skating runs throughout the year alongside the hockey and skating school programs.
