Southampton Ice Rink grew out of a family dream at the Southampton Golf Range on County Road 39. Owner Will Hansen's mother Gladys was a figure skater and his father Bill a skater too, and in the 1950s they searched several states for a rink to buy without finding one. In 2013 the family bought a chiller so the ice would hold even above freezing, and planned a Thanksgiving-weekend opening with a DJ and complimentary hot chocolate.
Today it is the only covered ice rink on the east end of Long Island, a 120-by-50-foot sheet that typically runs from November 1 to April 1. It is one of the homes of the Peconic Wildcats travel hockey organization and hosts the Southampton Hockey League, a three-on-three adult league that plays from November to March.
Skating school students perform in a show during Winter Fest in February, and since 2021 three heated igloos beside the ice let families watch the skating without feeling the winter cold.
