Two rinks in Hauppauge since 1992
The Rinx opened in Hauppauge in 1992 with two full-size indoor rinks. Over the years its ice has hosted select New York Islanders practices, Police Athletic League hockey and the Suffolk County High School League.
Figure skaters train here at every level, from beginners to advanced competitors: The Rinx runs a Learn to Skate USA program, is a Professional Skaters Association Excellence on Ice facility, and fields its own synchronized skating team, Team Rinx. A day camp and preschool in the building also get ice time. The best-known public session is the Friday Night Skate, aimed at a younger crowd for decades: the lights go off, the strobes come on and the popular songs of the day play as dozens of middle schoolers take the ice.
In February 2023 the building closed after damage to the subfloor heating system caused frost to form under the ice. It reopened that June after a $5.6 million renovation, the first major one since the 1992 opening, which brought new ice surfaces, boards and scoreboards to both rinks.
