The East End's first full-size covered ice rink

Peconic Ice Rinks' Ed Westfall Arena opened in November 2023, the first full-size covered ice rink on Long Island's East End. The idea dates to 2015, when Troy and Caryn Albert's son started playing hockey and they set out to build a rink out east; eight years of development followed. Peconic Hockey raised $2.3 million and donated the bubble dome to the town, and its own families did much of the finishing work, assembling the skin, painting locker rooms and laying flooring.

The arena is a domed full-size sheet, and an adjacent outdoor practice rink is dedicated to Barbara Williams, a long-time skating coach. Outdoor programs now include roller hockey and dek hockey. The arena is named for Ed Westfall, the first captain of the New York Islanders and scorer of the first goal in Islanders history on October 7, 1972, who attended the ribbon-cutting with members of the Islanders organization. Jack Greig directs hockey and Kim Interdonato directs skating.

A dome has its hazards. In January 2026 snow partially deflated it, and sheets of ice sliding off the fabric tore it in a couple of places; after repairs the arena reopened at the end of that month. The 2026 edition of Hockey Is Hockey, the rink's own event, came eleven years after the outdoor pickup game that started it.
