Paramount's 1940 Zamboni family rink, where Frank Zamboni built the first ice resurfacer.
LA Kings Iceland was founded by the Zamboni family in Paramount. In 1939, seeing little future in the ice block business, the Zamboni brothers and their cousin Pete Zamboni turned their refrigeration business toward a skating rink, and Iceland Skating Rink opened in January 1940 as one of the largest in the country, with 20,000 square feet of ice.
It began as an open-air rink, but the Southern California sun and dry desert winds hurt the ice, and a dome was added a few months later. Resurfacing then meant pulling a scraper behind a tractor, a 90-minute job for five workers. In March 1942 Frank Zamboni bought a tractor and started experimenting at the back of the rink, and by the summer of 1949 his Model A Zamboni Ice Resurfacer was producing a good sheet consistently.
The rink stayed in the family until it was sold to the LA Kings, AEG and American Sports Entertainment Company, which remodeled it as LA Kings Iceland. Its single sheet measures 200 by 100 feet, and in 2025 the Kings and ASEC partnered with Loyola Marymount University to bring LMU hockey here.
